Eruptions

If you have been following me via twitter or even watching the news recently then you are aware of the fact that we dealing with a volcano.  I have never lived in an area where there are active volcanoes.  It has been a little exciting and a little inconvenient.  Mt. Redoubt is about 100 miles from where I live and we are well aware of all of her rumblings.  We have been anticipating an eruption since January and finally about a week and a half ago the eruptions began.  We have pretty much been living life as usual.  One day in the last week though the ash blew our way.  It made the eyes sting and the air smelled a little bit like sulfur.  I think ash is a bad term to use though.  It might look like ash but it is really little bits of minerals, rock, and glass.  It is really fine like sand.  It is hard, abrasive, mildly corrosive, conducts electricity when wet, and does not dissolve in water(learn more about VOLCANIC ASH). We had to take care and make sure we had our vehicles in the garage or covered with a tarp, we had to seal up the vents to outside, and pull out our face masks.  It is rather strange to see people walking down the street with face masks on as if it was no big deal at all but people here in Alaska are used to this type of thing.  The volcano is fairly quiet at the moment and I am wondering if it is the quiet before another storm of eruptions.  We are keeping a close eye on Mt.
