Great topic! We will host a Homecoming Dance for teens at Disneyland this year in September, and we have a strict modesty and conduct code in place. We’ve never worried that teens will not come, because once they do they realize how modesty really makes for a much more comfortable environment. I don’t believe that young women should feel like they need to wear strappy, low cut dresses to get boys to talk to them. And I don’t believe that young men need to act like gangsters to get girls to respect them. By wearing modest attire, and using moral conduct, there is a lot less focus on looks – and a lot more focus on the person inside. Out of more than 80 kids who attended last year, we only had two complaints on the dress code from mothers who indicated “it’s not like boys haven’t seen cleavage before”. Seriously! Quite frankly, we don’t hold dances so that teens can be flirty. Those who want to be permiscuous can do so on their parents watch. We hold dances and activities so that teens can make true friends and develop longlasting relationships. For about 80 teens, this approach and the decision to stand on conviction was extremely effective. I still get emails from parents whose kids met more new and lasting friends from that dance than any other social activity for homeschoolers they have ever attended.
