I want to give a big thank you to Marymo5 from Raising Godly Daughters for the award she has passed on to me.  It is such a blessing and encouragement to know that the little I do here at my blog has a positive impact on others.  So now it is my turn to pass the award on to a few blogs/bloggers that I find Kreativ, Inspiring, and Encouraging.

Observing Lent

Lent is not something that is observed in my denomination’s tradition.  However, I have always thought that our denomination doesn’t do enough during this season.  We observe Palm Sunday, Easter Sunday, and maybe you might get a Good Friday service but usually only a mention of the day not a worship time.  With my hubby’s position as a minister we have been able to broaden our worship times to include more services/observances and focus on Christ more throughout the entire season.

My friend Renae over at Life Nurturing Education posted a link to a great resource.  This resource comes in the form of an E-book my Miiko Gibson.  This e-book shares the history and reasons for Lent as well as daily activities that you can incorporate into your family devotion/worship times throughout this season.  Even if Lent is not something that you observe, we all need to be examining our hearts and growing more and more in Christ.  It is another way to make Resurrection Sunday hold the meaning it should rather than bunnies, eggs, and chocolates.

This E-book is being offered for free!  To receive this free gift of E-book and sample calendars visit Our Grace Journey  and look for  Lenten Tree and Activities Book  by Miiko Gibson.

Here are a few excerpts from Miiko Gibson’s book.

Lent is the 40 days, not counting Sundays, before Easter. The first day of Lent is called
Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on the
foreheads of the faithful as a sign of repentance. The ashes used are gathered after the
palm leaves from the previous year’s Palm Sunday are burned.

Even if our church observes Palm Sunday, the next time the church meets is Easter Sunday. Good Friday is almost glossed over if the family doesn’t make an effort to think about it!

Does your family observe Lent? How do you prepare for Resurrection Sunday before it actually arrives?

Spc. Ross A. McGinnis

Spc. Ross A. McGinnis
19 years old from Knox, Pennsylvania
1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division
December 4, 2006
U.S. Army

His mission was to patrol the streets of Adhamiyah in northeast Baghdad and find a place to put a 250-kilowatt generator that would provide electricity for more than 100 homes. But it’s a mission he wasn’t able to accomplish.

Shortly after Pfc. McGinnis’s convoy left the compound, and less than a mile from FOB Apache, an insurgent standing on a nearby rooftop threw a grenade into the sixth, and last, Humvee. “Grenade!” yelled McGinnis, who was manning the vehicle’s M2 .50-caliber machine gun. He tried to deflect the grenade but it fell into the Humvee and lodged between the radios.

“McGinnis turned and looked down and realized no one in the truck knew where the grenade was,” said Capt. Michael Baka, his company commander. “He knew everyone had their doors combat-locked and they wouldn’t be able to get out.”

Instead of jumping out of the truck to save his own life, like he had been trained to do, McGinnis threw his back against the radio mount, smothering the explosive with his body. The grenade exploded just as Pfc. McGinnis covered it. The blast filled the vehicle with black smoke and debris and blew the driver’s door and right passenger’s door wide open and blew the machine gun off its mount. The explosion hit McGinnis on his sides and his lower back, under his vest. He was killed instantly.

The other four soldiers in the Humvee suffered relatively minor injuries.

On the morning of December 4, 2006, before his convoy had left, Cpt. Baka has signed a waver promoting Pfc. McGinnis to Specialist and he was posthumously promoted to E-4.

For his heroic actions on that day, McGinnis was awarded the Silver Star and was nominated for a Medal of Honor which he received on June 2, 2008.

Blogging Interrupted By Life

Once again my regular blogging has been interrupted by life. Sometime life is just too busy to sit down and write out a post. I have several posts going through my brain right now but not enough time to get them typed out. I know that for the past few weeks I have missed posting my ponderings on Mondays. That is not because I have run out of things to ponder, in fact, there are several of those posts being formulated in my brain as I type this. Alas, life has interrupted my blogging. So what have I been up to rather than blogging?

We attended a wedding this past Saturday. It was a beautiful wedding and it was so good to see friends we had not seen in six years. I had a blogging friend ask me how a family the size of ours was able to attended a wedding. Really, it is not that difficult. It was just like getting ready for church.

We have also been enjoying the sunshine, warmer weather, and added hours of daylight. Yesterday we had an amazing day. My hubby had the opportunity to preach at the morning service, something he has missed working in the hospital.  There is a place in town where a lady feeds the bald eagles. After church we went and watched. Along with many others, we were amazed at the beauty and majesty of these amazing birds. They are definitely one of my favorite of God’s creation. There were 75-100 bald eagles swooping to pick up the bits of salmon thrown out for them. They were only a few feet away from us and soaring above us. It was a site to behold.

My hubby had the day off today so we went to Starbucks for coco and cake. It was only a 1/2 hour but it was good to have that time alone with him. We have friends that are struggling in their marraige which was a reminder of how good to be able to spend time, no matter how short, to focus on strenghtening ours. We spent time in prayer for our friends marraige as well, please say a pray for them too. As a wonderful end to the day, I came home after taking children to skating to a bunch of potted tulips. My hubby is the sweetest!

This past weekend our eldest daughter was hired for her first “real” job, other than babysitting or teaching piano. We have been running her around trying to get all of the paperwork and other stuff required for her to begin working. She will be working at the movie theater in town which means free tickets for mom and dad, so that way hubby and I will be going out more often! What a great perk, huh?

So as you can see, I have not been ignoring everyone in blogland. My blogging has just been interrupted by life.

Who Seeks? Where is the Power?

Here is a little clip with some harsh truth! Who is it that seeks after God? Where does the power lie? Listen to R.C. Sproul’s (my fav!) and Al Mohler’s thoughts on the issue. Then add your thoughts.

Sgt. Kelly Keck
Sgt. Kelly Keck
34 years old from West Liberty, Kentucky
U.S. Army

Secretary of the Army Pete Geren congratulates Sgt. Kelly Keck after presenting him the Purple Heart.
On September 13, 2008, Sgt. Kelly Keck, a combat medic serving in Afghanistan, was wounded while trying to aid his fellow soldiers who’s truck had just been struck by an IED. “I stepped off the road to try to get to the side of the truck, and the next thing I know I hear a loud boom, and I’m laying on the ground,” he said. Sgt. Kelly had stepped on a land mine. He was flown to a field hospital in Jalalabad where he ended up loosing three fingers on his left hand and his right leg below the knee. “It was quite an ordeal,” the soft-spoken soldier said.
