Scared of Color Part 2

A while back I posted about being scared of color and the trouble we are having trying to decide what to do with the paint color in our kitchen. I have learned a few things along the way.

  1. Stick with what you are comfortable with. Being adventuresome is good but don’t go too far.
  2. Television home decorator tips are NOT fail proof. Finding that one item to build the room around does not always work.
  3. Just because something would look great in someone else’s home does not mean it will work for you.

Well, I am ready to share with you our color pick! I found that one item that I loved! It was the curtains! I looked for a photo but could not find one to share. They were a striped curtain with cranberry, olive green, brown, and a mustard yellow. They are so pretty! Our accent wall, a pony wall and a beam across the ceiling have been painted cranberry. The rest was painted a yellow to match the curtains. That yellow was too lemony so we changed. We found a mustard yellow to match the curtains (the first try was tinted incorrectly). It didn’t look the best with our new cabinets either. It looked pretty good and was growing on us but it just was not us. I think I would have loved it in someone else’s kitchen! It was just too bold for us. Not to mention that our neighbor said we looked like we were living in a hamburger to which my children and husband together replied, “We’re lovin’ it!” Sorry but that TOTALLY did it for me!

We decided to replace the mustard with a neutral cream color (french ivory) and just use decorations and different curtains to go with the cranberry wall. It looked better than the mustard but we only finished painting two walls before we decided that it was just too white and was not going to work. Before you ask why we didn’t change the cranberry I will tell you. I LOVE my cranberry wall!!! It is my favorite color and have it all throughout my home. Before deciding on the cream color I mentioned to my hubby that I though a brown would be good but his reply was that the whole house was brown and he didn’t want anymore. He decided the other day that a brown was indeed the color we needed.

Our kitchen has now been painted a teddy bear brown, the accent wall and beam are still cranberry, and to keep the room from feeling to small due to the darker brown the ceiling is the french ivory. We think it looks pretty good!

We only have a few finishing touches, which may or may not get completed right away, so check back here! I will post some before and after photos for you to critique! I am not scared of color anymore, I am just learning how to apply it along our family’s personality.

Teddy Bear Brown! That’s so cool! I don’t know that I would ever have thought of it, but I know we would love it! In this house, our bedroom is a taupy brown, because our family room was that color in the last house and we loved it.

And it never even occurred to me to think you would ditch the cranberry. ;)

Love the updates about the house! Been following your blog awhile now and even though I don’t know you I had a dream two nights ago that I read online that you were in labor, so I’ve been praying a lot for you! Take care of yourself these next couple of weeks and I’ll continue praying for you and baby!!

Whoa Nelly, totally out of my element when it comes to picking colors. I agree, I have to see it to know whether I like it.
