Pondering Teaching Music and Art

Starry Night and Starry Night over the Rhone
Often when we homeschool, the extra things get pushed to the side. Math and English tend to prevail when time runs short. It is important however to teach the arts. Are you able to incorporate the teaching of music and art? How do you do so? Do you teach it yourself or do you opt for the private lesson? Maybe you have a homeschool group or co-op that offers these classes. Do you use a specific curriculum? If so, what do you use? What is your favorite music curriculum? What is your favorite art curriculum?
We have been involved in a homeschool band with a co-op. We have participated in children’s choir at church. We did use Calvert’s music program one year. We now have the children in private piano lessons where theory is also taught. This year we will be taking Fridays and using it as a catch up day for things that need to be finished and then with our extra time incorporating a full blown art program. I am so excited to be able to finally use this. This curriculum has been sitting on my shelf for a few years and we are going to put it to good use! We will be going through Visual Manna’s art program.

art is so great. We are taking music this year and enjoying it. We are going to a violin museum later this month and piano lessons every week. We don’t officially study paintings or artists, but we do like to paint like an artist.
Love the meme.

I am trying to integrate art and music more this year than the past years. It seems to fall to the wayside when I am trying to get everything else taught.
But this year I am trying to make sure that I do art and music at least once a week. So, I have been trying to remember to do it on Fridays.
I am teaching the kids recorder and for art, I am doing a little of drawing techniques and I am going to start doing so actual art studies in January I think.

I know this sounds really weird, but we taught the ladies many basic art principles using The Triumph of Individual Style. It is actually a college art curriculum which uses famous paintings as illustrations and then the concepts are applied by using them in developing the individual’s wardrobe.
It had the added benefit of really encouraging modesty.
