Pondering Prayer

Little Girl with Pray Rock by Laura Monahan
Little Girl with Pray Rock

What am I pondering today? I am pondering prayer; prayer and children. How do you teach your children to pray? What do you teach them about the practice, meaning, and importance of prayer? What do you pray for children?

In the past I posted about ways to pray for our children.

We teach our kids to pray at our meal times, and when we do family devotion at night we give them each a turn and we have special things we pray for each night.

I think that we need to add a notebook or sorts to track requests and answers to prayer as well as take requests and work on how to pray about what we’ve just learned.

It’ll help our kids get a passion for God if they see God answering prayer!

I posted about how we train our kids in prayer. Until I wrote it out, I had no idea how much we are teaching them to pray and how much I pray. Pray without ceasing really plays out in our house.
Side note, when my oldest daughter was 5, I found her in her room crying. When I asked her what was wrong, she said that she wanted to pray without stopping like the Bible says but then she would not be able do anything else. I had to explain to her that she could still do things while she was praying in her heart. :)

We teach our kids that prayer is their private conversation with God. It is not reserved for meal or bedtime – it is an ongoing dialog. We do encourage them to plan specific time to worship, reflect and replenish.

As a mom, I speak out loud to God, to show them He’s never far from my thoughts and to see how He uses me, instead of how I use him.

This is a great meme. Love the idea!!! I also love the topic of prayer. It is something that is so important to teach… to pray without ceasing. To pray all the time – all day long, but to also have a special quiet time for conversation with the Lord.

Hope you are having a great day today…

What a great meme! I hate the fact that I’m late! I teach my children that prayer is their life line to God. It is your power source and should be regarded as something sacred and special. I pray for many things for my children but the most common prayers are ones for a close relationship with God, discernment and wisdom, and eyes and a heart like our Father.

I pray for the grandcrew. I pray that each of them will come to know Christ as their Lord and Savior. I pray that each of them will grow in the Lord and that someday they will find that person that God has prepared just for them to marry. I pray that their marriage will be has happy as the one my parents enjoyed, my wife I have enjoyed, and that their parents are enjoying.

I pray with my children there out loud and we keep several notebooks that are running prayer lists. One is life threatening serious stuff, one is more trivial stuff like difficulties with neighbors one is unsaved people we know or that are with in 6 degrees of seperation so to speak and are brought to our attention by another. some have multiple volumes. there is only one request per page. we pull them out when answered. The kids sit with me once a week per category to pray each of these. Eventually they feel lead to pray aloud too just by being their in prayer with me for many years. I however never saw either of my parents pray unless they were doing so publicly often with an air of falseness and I had to buy books to learn how to pray because no one had ever taught me. I eventually stumbled into a working prayer life.
