Pondering Biblical Censorship

David with The Head of Goliath, 1606 by Caravaggio
David with The Head of Goliath, 1606

Have you ever noticed that many of the Bible stories that are told to children have been sensored? Only certain stories are shared with children and several others are sensored. I have heard it said that it is to protect their innocence. That is a subject all on its own. A perfect example is the story of David and Goliath. The story always seems to end with the stone hitting Goliath in the head and he falls down dead. The whole fact that David took Goliath’s sword and cut off his head and killed him is left out of the story.

1 Samuel 17:49-51

And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground. 50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David. 51 Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.

Many say that the graphic details do not need to be told to understand the truth of the Biblical account. I believe though that the entire story should be told. It was given to us for a reason. Even if only to hold the attention of little boys. (*grin*)

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think there should be sensorship when it comes to sharing the Biblical accounts with children? Do you sensor these accounts? Why or why not? Had you even pondered this topic before?

Starbucks For Homeschoolers

Personally, I HATE coffee! I do know though that most in this country seem to love it especially if it is a Starbucks coffee. So out of my love for all of my blogging homeschool moms who like coffee, this is for you.

Starbucks is offering free coffee for homeschool parents.
This coming Monday, September 29, homeschool parents will be able to pick up a complimentary tall size (12 fl. oz.) cup of Pike Place Roast from Starbucks. This promotion is part of Starbucks “Great Start for Great Teachers” promotion, and is now open to all teachers.
HSLDA intervened when they were alerted that homeschool parents were not included in the promotion. They are pleased that Starbucks is recognizing the contribution of homeschool parents by extending their program to us.

In order to pick up your free cup of Pike Place Roast you will need to present evidence that you are a homeschooler.

Any one item on the following list should be accepted by Starbucks:

1. Home School Legal Defense Association membership card.
2. Membership card from a state homeschooling organization.
3. Notification from a school district or state government recognizing compliance with compulsory attendance.
4. Paperwork submitted showing intent to establish a homeschool program.
5. Paperwork showing the establishment of a private school.

If you don’t have one of the items on this list be creative and try to provide other proof of homeschooling.
Please note: the final decision about whether to accept proof of homeschooling resides with Starbucks. We hope you choose to take advantage of this offer.

Our New Home

It is official! We signed the papers yesterday and receive our keys today. We are now home owners. This is the first home we have purchased and we are so excited to have our own place. I do not have to worry about which paint color I choose or anything else I want to do to the house. Not that I am bold enough to pick some bright bold color BUT I could if I wanted to; it is my house. Thank you Lord for your great provision!!!! So what do you think of our new house??

All About Moose

Being here in Alaska, moose are a big deal. I thought I would share with you some of the things we have learned about moose since arriving here a few months ago. Enjoy!

  1. Moose are so much bigger than you imagined!
  2. Rutting or mating season comes in the fall, and boys impress ladies by pitting antler against antler.
  3. When driving moose are hard to see because of their height and because your lights won’t reflect in their eyes or off their coats.
  4. More people are injured each year by moose than by bears.
  5. If its ears are laid back and hackles are up it is likely to charge.
  6. Aggressive behavior toward humans is more common when cow moose are protecting their young in the summer or during the rutting season.
  7. Never get between a cow and a calf. Don’t walk toward a moose if you can avoid it; try to remain at least 50 feet away.
  8. Never throw snowballs at a moose.
  9. Try to get behind a tree if a moose charges. You can run around the tree better than it can.
  10. Unlike with a bear, it is okay to run from a moose.
  11. Moose kick with their front hoofs as well as their hind hoofs.
  12. At the beginning of rutting season the velvet is shed from the antlers of the bull moose.
  13. The bull moose large antlers have reached their peak for rutting season and will eventually fall off for the winter months ahead.

Happy 16th!

It does not seem all that long ago that our daughter, our preemie, was in the NICU and tiny. Yesterday she turned 16 years old. She has the unfortunate timing of having her birthday in September, which just happens to be after we move. So when her birthday rolls around she does not know anyone and we do not know the area well enough to know of much to do for a birthday. This being her 16th birthday though we wanted to do something special. So we decided to surprise her by flying in her best friend. Her friend is here to stay with us for a week and we have been pretty busy. Here is a photo of our daughter (on the right) and her friend at the Matanuska Glacier.
We are so proud of our daughter and the young woman she has become. She is smart and strong in Godly character. She has been such a blessing to us, our family, and all she meets. Thank you Lord!

Pondering Prayer

Little Girl with Pray Rock by Laura Monahan
Little Girl with Pray Rock

What am I pondering today? I am pondering prayer; prayer and children. How do you teach your children to pray? What do you teach them about the practice, meaning, and importance of prayer? What do you pray for children?

In the past I posted about ways to pray for our children.
