Where We Are In Our Travels

Well, the ferry trip was wonderful! It took us through such beautiful places! I did get seasick and lost my lunch but only once and it was out in open water rather than the milder water. Our one child that with ADHD had a tense first day on the ferry too. I think she has some anxiety issues also. The first night was stressful for her and all three of her ticks were manifested again and in succession as well as a return of the bedwetting which of course brought many tears. After the first night though things were back to normal and she had a wonderful time.

We were able to see humpbacks, orcas, porpoises, and bald eagles. Our drive through Canada was fun also. We saw several bears, swans, and a fox. We are still looking for the moose but am sure they will be in view before long. The scenery is so beautiful! God is such an awesome creator!

Prices are very shocking though! I knew it was expensive but give me a break! $7 for a gallon of milk, $5 for a package of bologna, $6 a gallon on gasoline, and a 20 ounce diet dr. pepper cost my hubby $3 today!

Alaska is a bit cheaper than Canada was but it is still costly. I think hubby filled up for $4.80 a gallon tonight. Well, we are settling down and getting children ready for bed and should arrive in Anchorage tomorrow. So until I get another chance……..that is the update! Hopefully, photos will come soon!

Kristine, I’m SO excited for you! Don’t worry about your minor “trouble” on the ferry ~ seasickness has happened to at least half of the people I know who have made that ferry trip. :)

No worries, you will see plenty of moose, and bears, and bald eagles, and lots of other fun wildlife while you’re living there. Take the bear and moose warnings seriously, though. Moose are dumber than rocks ~ they won’t give you any sort of signs that they’re about to charge you. Bear will at least snuff or growl or paw the ground; moose will just stand there placidly looking at you one minute and the next minute they’ll charge and try to trample or kick you.

Every year in Eagle River (just before salmon fishing season, when people start throwing out the old salmon in their freezers to make room for fresh salmon), over by the fire station, you’ll see tons of bald eagles. Trees and trees full of bald eagles. And all year round you’ll have to be careful not to set your garbage out the night before the garbage truck comes because the bears will get into it. They even have a law in Eagle River against putting the trash out before the morning of your scheduled pick up.

Today Roger was looking at real estate in Eagle River in the old neighborhood where we lived before we moved into base housing. A house just down the street from ours, where Roger’s squadron commander lived, is selling for $385,000 ~ a 2000 sq. ft. house! Wow. That’s just crazy. And trust me ~ there’s nothing special about that house. Just a plain old 2000 sq. ft., 3 bedroom split-level house.

I must admit, I am envious even though housing prices there are ridiculous. The heat here in Arkansas is out of control. Temps are in the lower 100′s, with heat indexes around 114+. I miss the cooler weather ~ and the mountains. Definitely miss the mountains.

I’m looking forward to seeing pictures. Enjoy your adventure. Your time in Alaska will most likely be one of the major highlights of being a military family! :)

    Blessings,
    Trish

We would love to be moving to Alaska. Next stop is Fort Sam Houston for more school for my dh. We are excited though. We love San Antonio, not that I’m much of a city girl. Looking forward to pics.

Aw, man! I miss Anchorage (really, Alaska) SOOOOO much! You’re going to LOVE it… esp because summertime in Alaska is like heaven on earth. Beautiful!

I agree w/ the PP… prices will get better in Anchorage. However, I left two years ago, and there was still no Target or Walgreens. :(

However, for natural/organic foods, I recommend the Natural Pantry on 36th and the highway (I think… it’s been two years!), and New Sagaya (across the street).

However, there’s a Costco and Sams Club close to Elmendorf (I assume you’ll be living there?)… I took advantage of that!

Anyway, you’re going to LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

Your trip sounds wonderful… except for the lost lunch (sigh)… it happens to the best of us ;)

I’m asking for prayer from my fellow bloggy moms, for my niece – in a terrible situation. There are details at my blog – “Herding Grasshoppers”.

    Thanks,

    Julie

You’ll see LOTS of moose before you leave…but if you’ve not seen any yet…we ALWAYS saw moose – any time of the year in Kincaide park….and lots of wonderful views too…great walking paths….out by the cook inlet.

    Prices are cheaper in Anchorage.

    I’m excited for you.
