13 Things About The Shetland Sheepdog

Thursday Thirteen13 Things About Shelties
Our family has had several pets over the many years but the ones we have had the longest are the two dogs we currently own. We have two Shelties, Annie & Shiloh. They are of sable coloring, meaning they look like the dog in the middle above. For a bit of fun, since I love my dogs, I thought I would share 13 things about Shelties.
- Sheltie is short for Shetland Sheepdog, a herding breed that originates from the Shetland Islands near Scotland.
- Shelties are often called “miniature collies” because they look similar to rough collies only in miniature sizes, but they are actually a totally separate breed .
- They are excellent with children and are great for a large family (they are herding dogs!)
- There are three main colors for Shelties; Black, blue merle, and sable (ranging from golden through mahogany)and can be marked with varying amounts of white and/or tan.
- The Shetland Sheepdog is intensely loyal, affectionate, and responsive to his owner.
- With strangers they are often shy and timid.
- When running they often look as if they are prancing, they are a very graceful looking dog.
- Their life expectancy is 12-15 years.
- Their height should be between 13-16 inches at the shoulders.
- They should only weigh between 14-27 pounds. (mine are on a diet!!)
- When bored they do tend to bark a lot.
- They have a double coat, an outer coat of long, straight, harsh hair and a short & furry undercoat.
- They are adorable!!!

We had a golden retriever growing up, but my kids are afraid of dogs, so we have cats now. Your looks like a beautiful dog!
Happy TT!

They are so adorable! When I was a child growing up in NY, my parents raised Collies. I remember one time I forgot to shut the gate and one of them ran away.
So sad. Now, I own a Pit Bull and a Chihuahua!! Wow, what a switch, huh? LOL

Wow, I’ve always thought of Shelties as miniature collies. Thanks for the information. Like collies, though, they are beautiful dogs.
Happy TT!

They sort of look like Lassie, but wasn’t Lassie a collie? I don’t know a lot about the different dog breeds.

I thought Lassie was a collie, but I really do not know for sure, it has been so long since I have seen Lassie!

We had a Sheltie named Lady when my kids were young, and they were so sad when she died. My daughter was inconsolable for a long time. We now have a German Shepherd and a toy poodle (I know, strange combination!), but my kids (now grown) still remember Lady fondly. They are beautiful dogs.

They are such pretty dogs. I had a full-sized collie when I was young. We have Aussies now and lvoe the breed.
