Holy, Holy, Holy

This week I thought I would share one of my most
favorite hymns. The words to this hymn were
written by Reginald Heber in 1826. Heber wrote
this hymn for Trinity Sunday while he was Vicar
of Hodnet, Shropshire, England. Tennyson considered
this hymn to be one of the finest ever written.
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee;
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
Which wert and art and everymore shall be!Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see,
Only Thou art holy, there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in power, in love, and purity!Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy name, in earth, and sky, and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

I go to a Church of Christ, where we always sing a capella, and this song is one we sing often. My favorite way to sing it is to let each part sing the words to a verse, while the other parts hum. (Soprano first, alto, tenor, and lastly bass) So my favorite verse is the second one, since I sing alto. In the end, all parts join together and sing the first verse once more, and it’s just so majestic—even in our church with about 150 on a good Sunday morning!
Thanks for sharing!
