The Importance of Sound Doctrine

More and more God has been showing me the importance of sound biblical doctrine; Christian teaching free from any mixture of error or worldly influence and interpretation.

Titus 1:9
He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

Within the church today there is a lack of teaching about the importance of sound doctrine. In fact, in many instances, doctrine has become a thing to try to avoid. I have heard many statements in the past few years that attest to this.

Comments such as:

  1. I don’t send my children to church to learn doctrine, I send them to learn the Bible.
  2. We don’t need to get bogged down with boring stuff like doctrine, all we need is Jesus.
  3. Those who study and get caught up in doctrine are caught up in head knowledge rather than heart knowledge.
  4. It doesn’t matter if we disagree on doctrine, we just need to get people saved.

Without sound biblical doctrine we are at risk of creating a false and/or unbalanced image of God, one that is based upon our own opinions. This occurs when we take selected verses or passages out of context and read into it what we think it should say without considering the whole of scripture. Scripture interprets scripture; this should be the litmus test, not our opinions or desires of who or what we think God should be. R.C. Sproul puts it this way, “We must be careful to worship God as He has been revealed to us. (In the Bible).”

I know many do not understand why some Christians seem to be so passionate and even heated at times over issues of biblical doctrine. Simply put, it is because it matters so very much!

I Timothy 4:15-16
Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all. Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.

For me, doctrine becomes so difficult because of so many differet things men say and then call it doctrine. It just gets confusing a lot. That’s why I have problems when doctrine is presented without scripture (or even with sometimes because it isn’t accurate scripture). I’ve had “some interesting” catholic doctrines thrown at me over the past few days.

(just making general statements.. not disagreeing with you .. or offended by anything…LOL)

by the way, wanted to add that what you said about SOUND doctrine is so true and the whole key to what is important..

Why is it that churches find it so hard to teach the fullness of God – the complete Bible? I am puzzled by this daily. Without knowing our Lord and Savior completely, how are we able to fight the woes of this world. I am constantly telling my children that we need to read the Bible all the way through and listen to our pastors, check what they say with the Word of God, and pray/seek wisdom for our individual lives. It’s so important to have sound doctrine. Thanks for sharing.
