"Save us, Lord; we are perishing"
Jesus Calms a Storm Matthew 8:23-27
And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”
This is a familiar story that I have read several times before, however last night the Lord revealed something to me that I had not yet taken to heart. Usually when studying this passage people tend to focus on the part of the disciples faith or more so their lack of faith. This is the point that I had always heard taught. Last night though the Spirit drew the eyes of my heart to a different phrase within this passage. The phrase is this: “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” Many of the disciples were fisherman and knew how to be out at sea, no doubt they had been busy doing all they could during this storm to save themselves. In their desperation they cried out to Jesus. I continue to look at the words they spoke and can see how they relate to their experience and their situation in the boat yet they mean so much more.
In our lives when we find ourselves in dire circumstances, do we cry out to God? Usually, because dire circumstances are often needed to make us rely upon God. In our culture where the independence of the individual is so highly honored many feel as if they can handle everything all by themselves or at least should be able to do so. The fact is though that we need the Lord! What about in just our daily lives? Things such as being a husband or wife, a father or a mother, a friend, a coworker, a neighbor, a mentor? Or in dealing with our own sin? Pride, selfishness, lying, anger, gossip, or any other sin you would like to list? Do we feel the desperation that the disciples felt? Do we feel the urgent need for our Savior? We need to be crying out “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” We were created to need our Savior why should we believe that we can do anything without Him?
There are many in this world that do not even know that they are perishing. We need to share with them and show them their need for the Savior.
