Holocost Movies

I am a sucker for dramatic and often sad historical fiction movies, if well done. The Holocaust is often a subject many shy away from however, I am one who believes it is important to remember the tragedies of the past and to learn from them and to honor those who died in such tragedies by not forgetting.

Several of my favorite movies are indeed Holocaust movies, do you think poorly of me now for saying that?

The first one is Schindler’s List. It was made with the help of actual Holocaust survivors and is harshly accurate. It does contain violence, language, some nudity, and brutality. These are things I would typically use as reasons NOT to watch a movie but in the case of this film it is an accurate depiction of the life in a concentration camp.
This film is one that will be difficult for many to watch and you will most definitely need your Kleenex, a box or two. Theatrically speaking it is a very well done movie with beautiful music. Mostly black & white & gray. One part of the movie, uses the color red to highlight a little girl throughout the story and has a very dramatic and stark effect.

The second movie is much different and is actually a comedy. In fact the comedian opened himself up to charges for being insensitive, however he was well received by the Italian Jewish community. It brings a lightheartedness about in order to help deal with the horrors of living in a concentration camp. The one thing I did dislike was the fact that it is not in English and you must read subtitles. But it is an inspiring story of a man who seeks to save his son the horrors they are going through and the love he has for his son. The title is Life Is Beautiful

Third, The Hiding Place, which is the story of Corrie Ten Boom, a christian who is sent to a concentration camp for sheltering Jews. The story is her story and shows how her faith sustains her.

Fourth, The Diary of Anne Frank

Schindler’s List has been something I’ve been meaning to watch for years and have never quite gotten around to it.
The holocaust hits hard for my family because we lost all of our family members who were left in Europe (my grandmother and her family came over right before WWI, every one else stayed) to the camps.

I am sorry to hear about what your family went through. I do think that Schindler’s List really shows a lot of the harsh truth. The others are good as well.
